Can a student use VA Education benefits for classes that are not a part of their program of study?
In most cases, students cannot use VA education benefits (such as the Post-9/11 GI Bill or other GI Bill programs) to pay for classes that are not part of their program of study or degree plan. The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) requires that all courses for which benefits are used must be:
Required for the student’s approved degree or certificate program, OR
A pre-approved elective or prerequisite within that program.
